"One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art."
Oscar Wilde
In an economy dominated by mass production and consumerism, a number of cycling apparel designers are challenging the status quo by creating iconic garments that fulfill needs beyond functionality.
For a long time, the myth has been that if it is beautiful, it must belong in the museums and art galleries; not the street nor the trails.
Once in a while, in the peloton of Le Tour De France, La Vuelta, L’Eroica etc. you will see a rider or a team stand out in style.
Over the years, very few jerseys have caught my attention like La Vie Claire/Radar Wonder Team Jersey adorned by Greg LeMond and more recently the Bauhaus tempo edition from LG Ärt Factory.

For the most part, race jerseys are more of advertising billboards than anything else.
It seems that the marketing teams are responsible for designing those apparel instead of designers.
This results in sponsors logos and crowded scribbles all over the jersey; leaving very little chance for creativity to spark.
When I first saw the Nelson Vails X GFNY 2023 Jersey and its matching classic cycling cap, it had the effect of an art masterpiece.

I loved them and immediately desired them.
They reminded me of Jean Michel Basquiat's colorful paintings and graffiti.
Those bright and expressive colors are a bold statement.
Visibility matters, especially in brutal New York City streets.

I wasn’t surprised when I learned that they were designed in New York, the city that is unapologetic and loud, yet refined.
The fabric is absolutely superb, combining state of the art technology and fashion trends.

There is no way this jersey will slip under the radar, be it on a rider or in a display.
They command attention.
Last March, at the Philadelphia Bike Expo, I wore the Nelson Vails classic cycling cap and everyone I talked to complimented the cap. Even people I didn’t know would stop me to ask about the cap.

It was such a great conversation starter, which is what a great jersey often does.
