In the summer of 1984, Nelson Vails was without any doubt the audience favorite in the legendary track battle that opposed him to his longtime teammate and friend Mark Gorski.
Both athletes exhibited a great performance and sportsmanship.
 
Although Gorski won the gold medal, Nelson's Vails silver medal seemed to be the talk of the town and the focus of aftermath conversations.
This was of course due to his athletics abilities but also his atypical trajectory from a bike messenger in New York City to the Olympics Games.
